Media Blasting a Log Cabin

What is Media Blasting?

Media blasting a log cabin is a surface preparation method used to remove old finishes, dirt, mildew, and other contaminants from log surfaces. This process can be essential for restoring the natural beauty of log homes and preparing them for refinishing with stains, sealants, or chinking. Media blasting is considered by many to be the “gold standard” of log surface remediation.

Media blasting involves propelling abrasive materials at high velocity onto the log surface using specialized equipment such as blasting pots and high CFM air compressors. The goal is to strip away unwanted layers while causing minimal damage to the wood underneath. Unlike power washing, which uses water, media blasting is a dry process that minimizes moisture absorption, potential wood swelling, and the need for lengthy dry times, eliminating any potential down time on a job site.

Types of Media Used for Blasting

Several types of blasting media can be used, each with unique properties suitable for different log home conditions:

  1. Glass Beads (Pencil’s Method)
    • Crushed glass beads are ideal for delicate and rough wood surfaces such as logs. They can provide a smoother finish and are often used for all types of coating restoration work. This method also has the most economical price point.
  2. Crushed Walnut Shells
    • Another eco-friendly option, walnut shells offer a balance between aggressive cleaning and preserving the wood’s integrity.
  3. Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
    • Soda blasting is a mild option that works well for very delicate wood surfaces and removing mold, mildew, and light coatings. This method is often used for small interior applications and the autobody industry.
  4. Sandblasting (Never Used)
    • Sand is more abrasive and can damage the logs, leading to splintering and a rough texture. It is avoided in log home restoration and generally unacceptable due to the presence of dangerous silicas found in the product.

Steps in Media Blasting a Log Cabin

  1. Preparation
    • Cover nearby delicate landscaping, and professional tape and cover all windows and doors with specialty plastic sheeting.
  2. Blasting the Logs
    • Using specialized equipment, the chosen media is blasted at the logs at a controlled and various pressures and material outputs depending on the situation.
  3. Dust and Residue Cleanup
    • Once blasting is complete, the surface is cleaned to remove dust and leftover particle using high pressure air lines and specialized blower attachments. Some material can be collected and reused, however this can be labor intensive.
    • Vacuuming or gentle brushing may be used to clear finer residues.
  4. Sanding (if necessary)
    • Depending on the finished surface, orbital sanding may be needed to smooth the wood before refinishing, however, it is important to note that all exterior stains adhere much better to a slightly rougher surface.
  5. Sealing and Staining
    • The logs are now ready for the application of protective coatings such as stains, sealants, or chinking to enhance durability and beauty.

Benefits of Media Blasting

  • Thorough Cleaning: Removes deep-seated dirt, mold, and stains.
  • Preserves Wood Integrity: Unlike power washing, it prevents moisture absorption.
  • Eco-Friendly Options: Blasting media choices are biodegradable and non-toxic.
  • Preparation for Refinishing: Ensures proper adhesion of new finishes.

Considerations Before Media Blasting a Log Cabin

  • Professional vs. DIY: Hiring professionals ensures the correct media type, pressure settings, and techniques are used to avoid damage. A LOT of damage can be done to log surfaces very quickly if the wrong materials, pressures, or techniques are used.
  • Cost: Media blasting can be an investment, but it’s crucial for long-term log home maintenance.
  • Dust Control: Adequate containment and cleanup measures will be planned. However, dust will find its way into the home and surrounding areas without fail.

Media blasting is an effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly way to restore and maintain log cabins, keeping them looking their best for years to come and increasing the value of your investment.
